HHS students take part in Northern South Dakota national qualifying tournament

HURON — The Huron Speech & Debate Team attended the Northern South Dakota National Qualifying Tournament hosted at Harrisburg High School on Feb. 16-17.

Huron had a strong tournament, qualifying four students for the National Speech & Debate Tournament to be held in Des Moines, Iowa this June.

“The team had an excellent qualifying tournament,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “We were led by a strong group of seniors, many of whom qualified for the National tournament and others who came close by becoming Alternates to nationals. This was a great way for these seniors to end their high school competition career.”

Top finishers from Huron:
• In Duet Interp, Green Ta Bah and Antoni Sorto qualified to nationals.  Samantha Swanson and Mylie Byrd finished as the second Alternate to nationals.
• In Humorous Interp, Tessa Gogolin qualified to nationals.  Cameron Cutshaw finished as the first Alternate to nationals.

• In Program Oral Interp, Samantha Swanson qualified to nationals. Lily Halter finished as the second Alternate to nationals.
• In Dramatic Interp, Cameron Cutshaw finished as the first Alternate to nationals.

“After over 40 years of coaching this sport, I still feel this tournament through the student’s eyes," Gaffer said. “I feel the joy of those that qualified and feel the heartbreak of those that worked so hard and came so close. The coaching staff is very thankful to have the opportunity of working with these young people. Huron has much to be proud of, and as a coaching staff, we are proud to serve these students and the community of Huron.”
