October is Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness Month, and Huron Regional Medical Center is partnering with several groups in the community to raise awareness and encourage women to schedule a mammogram through a variety of activities and by offering free mammograms to those in need.
In South Dakota, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. In 2023, an estimated 760 new cases and 110 deaths attributed to female breast cancer will occur in South Dakota.
To help educate community members of these startling statistics and increase the number of women receiving regular mammograms, HRMC is partnering with several local groups.
• Friday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Prostrollo Motors is hosting the seventh annual 1-Mile Walk for Breast Cancer at Ravine Lake. Community members are invited to this come-and-go walk to raise awareness and funds to prevent breast cancer. Email stschetter@prostrollo.com or stop at Prostrollo Motors to pre-register for the walk. Goodie bags and lunch will be available.
• Wednesday, Oct. 18, 4 to 8 p.m., Runnings Farm & Fleet will host the annual Ladies’ Night Out with food, vendors and deals, including 20% off clothing and footwear and 10% off just about anything else that fits in the themed bucket available for purchase for $2. HRMC staff will be on-hand providing early detection information and offering to schedule mammograms.
• Tuesday, Oct. 24, 7 p.m., Huron High School Volleyball will host the Mitchell Kernels at Huron Area for the annual Pink Out Volleyball match. Huron High School volleyball players will be selling themed t-shirts to be worn to the game with funds benefitting the HRMC Foundation’s We’ve Got You Covered program. T-shirts will be available for order through Oct. 15. Contact a volleyball player or visit hrmcfoundation.org to order online. An online basket auction will also be held during the week of the game.
• All month long, Cookie Dough Cupcakes will be selling Pink Ribbon cupcakes and making a donation for each cupcake sold to the HRMC Foundation’s We’ve Got You Covered Program.
Shoe Sensation has pink themed sales and specials and is selling pink ribbons that also benefit the local effort to educate and prevent breast cancer through the HRMC Foundation.
The We’ve Got You Covered program helps by offering free screening mammograms to women in need thanks to generous HRMC Foundation donors and partnerships like those happening this October. For more information about We’ve Got You Covered or to schedule a 3D mammogram, call 605-353-6334 or visit www.huronregional.org/mammo.
