HURON – The Huron 16U Tigers closed out the regular season with a sweep of Brandon Valley Sunday at Memorial Field, closing out the regular season with a nine-game winning streak heading into the state tournament.
After scoring first in the bottom of the first inning, the home team found themselves trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the offense simply exploded.
Cooper Bischoff led off the inning with a single to center field. Carter Porisch then walked and Nolan Stahly bunted to sacrifice the runners to second and third.
Chase Schuchhardt was hit by pitch to load the bases and Korbin Brock then walked to drive in a run. Tyce Huber smacked a ground ball at the first baseman that was mishandled, scoring Porisch and leaving the bases loaded. Oakley Anderson followed with a single to score Schuchhardt and an error on the throw also scored Brock.
Gavin Waldner walked to load the bases again. A passed ball with Elijah Shreeve at the plate scored Huber before Shreeve walked to load the bases again. Bischoff came to the plate for the second time of the inning and was hit by pitch to drive home another run, making it 7-3.
Porisch singled to left to score Waldner. With Stahly at the plate, Shreeve scored on a wild pitch. Stahly popped out, but Brock then walked to re-load the bases.
After a pitching change, Huber walked to drive in Porisch and Anderson walked to push Schuchhardt across the plate. Brock scored on a wild pitch with Waldner at the plate before Waldner walked to load the bases again. Shreeve singled to drive in Huber before Bischoff, on his third at-bat of the inning, popped out to second to end the inning with Huron up 14-3. That would be the final score for Huron.
Shreeve pitched the entire way, going five innings, allowing three unearned runs on two hits and a walk, striking out four.
Huron’s offense had 23 baserunners. Waldner led the way from the leadoff spot with two singles, two walks, and a stolen base. Porisch had a pair of singles and a walk while Shreeve and Brock each had a single and two walks.
Bischoff had a single, walk, and was hit by pitch. Huber had a walk, a single, and stole a base. Anderson had a single and a walk while Schuchhardt walked and was hit by pitch.
The second game began like it would be another Huron blowout, as the offense tallied three runs in the first inning, but the visitors clawed back to tie the score with two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.
Huron would score in the bottom of the sixth, but Brandon Valley knotted the score 4-4 with a run in the top of the seventh.
Shreeve was hit by pitch to open the bottom of the seventh and then advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. Brandon Valley then intentionally walked Bischoff and Stahly. Crayton Siedschlag struck out but then, with Jeremy Hofer at the plate, an error by the catcher brought Shreeve home with the winning run.
Waldner opened the game on the mound, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks, striking out four. Zach Scheer closed out the game with the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four walks and no hits. He struck out two.
Shreeve led the offense with a pair of doubles, was hit by pitch, and stole a base. Bischoff, Siedschlag, and Scheer each had a single and a walk. Siedschlag added a steal, as did Waldner.
Huron finishes the regular season at 19-10 and will begin state tournament play on Thursday in Rapid City, facing Aberdeen at 5 p.m. MT.
