Editor’s note: Due to a delayed start in Spearfish, the game was not over before the Plainsman went to press. The final score was 59-50 in favor of Huron, and the second half story will be in the paper Monday.

SPEARFISH — The Huron Tigers survived a second-quarter run to head into halftime in Spearfish leading the Spartans by a 26-23 score.

The Tigers set an aggressive pace right off the bat as Huron got the tip, worked the ball around the offense and Blake Ellwein nailed a quick-trigger three for the first points of the game.

Spartan leading scorer Dylon Doren then went to the line twice, coming away with three of four to knot the game at 3-3.

CJ Gainey posted up for Huron on an inbounds pass and hit the turn around jumper, but Seth Hamilton found the hold in the Tigers’ trap press, making a backdoor layup to knot the score at five.

Colt McNeil made a layup off a pass from Ellwein and then got the ball at the end of a Tiger break, following a steal and was fouled, sinking both free throws.

The next Huron possession, Carsen Evans hit a corner three to stretch the lead out to 12-5, but Spearfish wasn’t done.

Carter Gibbs came off the bench for Spearfish and hit a corner three, then Brody Janvrin hit one of two free throws before Doren nailed a three from the top of the key for a 12-12 tie.

Kolton Ogle got a sharp pass from Trace Wenz for a layup to send Huron to the second quarter with a 14-12 lead.

Ellwein and Doren had a battle to open the second half as Ellwein hit a turnaround jumper, Doren got a layup off the press, Ellwein got a put back on his own rebound and then nailed a three for a 21-14 Huron lead.

Porisch made a strong move and went to his left hand in the lane for a 23-14 Tiger margin, the largest of the first half.

Doren keyed the Spearfish comeback, scoring the next seven points in the game as the Huron lead dwindled to two, 23-21.

Ellwein finally broke the Huron cold streak with a jumper in the lane, and Ogle got one of two free throws. Kamren Davis had a reverse layup for the Spartans to make it 26-23 Huron at halftime.

Spearfish won the JV game 58-42.

The Tigers will travel to Sturgis this afternoon.
