Huron finishes sixth at ESD tennis meet

PIERRE — The Huron girls’ tennis team finished sixth at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament, which concluded Tuesday.

The Tigers had a trio of fourth-place finishes in the event to finish at 54.5 points.

Aberdeen Central, which had two singles champions and won two doubles title, claimed the ESD championship with 292.5 points.

Mitchell was second at 278, followed by Watertown at 260.5.

Rounding out the top five in the 9-team event were Brandon Valley at 175 and Yankton at 153.

Ann Hoek finished fourth for Huron in third flight singles. She suffered a 10-1 setback against top-seed Carsyn Wiech of Mitchell in the semifinals and then lost 8-2 to Faith Berg of Watertown in the third-place match.

Say Glay was fourth for the Tigers in the fourth flight. She lost 10-2 to Livia Douglass of Aberdeen Central in the semifinals and then was edged 9-8 in a tiebreaker to Sophia Nichols of Watertown in the third-place match.

Madeline Kleinsasser of Huron used a 9-8 (4) victory against Meagan Scott of Yankton in the consolation semifinals to reach the consolation title match in the sixth flight

Hannah Frye of Harrisburg got past Kleinsasser 8-5 in the final match to secure the fifth spot.

Glay combined with Paw Kler Moo to win an opening round match in flight 3 doubles against Watertown 10-4. Their run at a title ended with 10-5 setback against top-seeded Mitchell in the semifinals.

Brandon Valley then recorded an 8-5 win in the third-place match against Glay and Moo.  

Hoek and Kleinsasser rebounded from a 10-7 loss to top-seeded Aberdeen Central in the opening round with a 10-9 (5) win against Harrisburg in the consolation semifinals. They fell 8-0 against Watertown in the consolation title match.

The Tigers will close the season at the Class A State Tournament, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Sioux Falls.
