Huron JV baseball drops two to Mitchell

MITCHELL — The Huron Tigers JV baseball team had a pair of setbacks Monday evening in Mitchell, losing 4-3 and 15-3 to the Kernels.

In the opener, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first inning and a pair of runs in the third. However, the Kernels came back, scoring one run each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth before plating the walk-off winning run in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 4-3 victory.

Tommie Martin tossed five innings of two-run ball to open the game for Huron, allowing five hits and walking three Mitchell batters while striking out seven. Gabe Waldner took the loss with an inning pitched, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

Waldner was the catalyst on offense for the Tigers in the first game. He had three hits, driving in two of the three Huron runs. He laced a double and a triple and came a home run short of the cycle.

Jeremy Hofer and Cooper Bischoff each had a single and a walk. Oakley Anderson had a hit and was hit by pitch.

Anderson stole two bases while Cooper Bischoff and Martin each added a steal.

Mitchell had a monster first inning in the nightcap, plating all 15 of its runs in the first inning, putting the Tigers behind the 8-ball the rest of the way in a 15-3, five-inning loss.

Cooper Bischoff led off the game on the mound, and he did not record an out, allowing five runs on a hit and four walks. Zach Sheer relieved Bischoff but also did not complete the first inning, allowing 10 runs - nine of them unearned due to four Huron errors - on four hits and five walks. Parker Bischoff got things under control for the Tigers, tossing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and three walks, while striking out six.

The Tiger offense got on base plenty through nine walks, but the bats were mostly silent, garnering just one hit to sustain rallies.

Cooper Bischoff had the lone hit with a single and added a walk. Parker Bischoff and Martin each had two walks while Scheer was hit by pitch twice for Huron.

The JV squad will take a 2-5 record into Saturday’s home game with Jefferson at 11 a.m.
