Huron middle of the pack after first day of ESD tennis tournament

PIERRE — The Huron Tigers occupy sixth place after the first day at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tennis Tournament, being played at the Griffin Park tennis courts, next to the Missouri River in Pierre.

Watertown holds a six-point lead over Aberdeen, 76-70, after one day of play.

First round matches in all singles division were completed on the first day, as were doubles play-in matches.

Say Glay and Ann Hoek were the lone Tigers to triumph in the opening round.

Glay defeated Madelyn Von Wald of Harrisburg 11-10 in the fourth flight single match. Hoek moved past Addison Gordon of Yankton at No. 3 singles when Gordon had to default due to injury.

The same injury moved Hoek and doubles partner Madeline Kleinsasser past Evelyne Lima-Zapon and Gordon in the No. 2 doubles play-in game.

Today, Glay will face Livia Douglas of Aberdeen in the championship round semifinals, and Hoek will take on Carsyn Weich of Mitchell at the No. 3 singles semifinals.

Consolation round semifinals will find AnneClaire Rubish taking on Mckenzie Vickery of Harrisburg at No. 1; Elizabeth Heinen facing Erika Starr of Harrisburg at No. 2; Paw Kler Moo will tangle with Elly Clement of Mitchell at. No. 5 and Madeline Kleinsasser taking on Meagan Scott of Yankton at No. 6.

Doubles play will see Rubish and Heinen playing a team from Yankton at No. 1; Hoek/Kleinsasser will take on the top-seeded No. 2 team of Aberdeen and the team of Glay/Moo will open play against a team from Watertown.

Play resumes today, beginning at 8 a.m.
