HURON — Third grade students from Madison 2-3 Center, Holy Trinity School, and James Valley Christian School were treated to the experiences of farm life on Tuesday at the farm of Marc and Paula Kleinsasser north of Huron.

More than 240 students visited the farm, with many of them learning about the farm and having hands-on farm experience for the first time in their lives.

The day was sponsored by the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau’s Ag Committee.

Students enjoyed holding and petting baby chicks, exclaiming how “fluffy” they were.

One chicken was confused by all the guests and was wandering the farm throughout the day.

While some students were hesitant to touch them, one student reached in to pet the baby piglets.

For many students, the highlight of the day was being able to climb atop a real, live horse.

Area FFA students assisted the students onto the horses and guided them to gently pet the animals.

Evelyn Wollman and Rose Schwartz told students about their experiences teaching at a country school as students sat in the one-room schoolhouse located in the farm yard.

Students learn about the feed given to pigs and chickens on the farm.

The students learn how a corn planter works, from how the seed enters the ground to how fertilizer is added to the soil.

All of the students enjoyed rides in the horse-drawn wagons.
