HURON — Janice Rounds, age 89, of Huron, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.

Her Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2025 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, with burial to follow at St. Martin Cemetery in Huron.

Visitation, with her family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. A Rosary and Scripture Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Holy Trinity Catholic School in honor of Jan.

Janice Marie Bergerson was born on Dec. 12, 1935 to parents Toralf and Edna (Walters) Bergerson in Huron. She attended Huron schools earning her GED. She later attended Huron College graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree.

She met the love of her life, James Rounds at a skating rink while they were in high school. They married on Oct. 14, 1950, at St. Patrick’s in Cavour. Jim and Jan lived on a farm south of Cavour where they raised their family of 13 children. In 1980, the family moved to Huron. While in college, Jan worked for Senator George McGovern managing his field office. After graduating, she began her career with the Huron School District working with troubled youth at the middle school, Our Home, and Pride High. She wasn’t retired for long before becoming the librarian at St. Martin’s and Holy Trinity Catholic Schools.

Jan was a member of St. Patrick’s, St. Martin’s, and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. She was a member of the Altar Society at each church. Jan had a gift for music and played the violin in the Huron Symphony Orchestra for many years. She was a voracious reader. She also enjoyed crocheting many blankets for weddings and new babies. When her children were younger, she was a 4-H leader and taught many young ladies to sew. Jim and Jan loved to dance and were members of square-dancing clubs including the Cavour Twirlers.

Jan is survived by her children, Mary Rounds of Tulsa, Okla., Mark Rounds of Huron, Dave Rounds of Midland, Texas, Keith (Cathy) Rounds of Brookings, Kent (Nancy) Rounds of Glenwood, Iowa, Ann Salter of Dyersville, Iowa, Jeff Rounds of Huron, Gerry (Barb) Rounds of Aurora, Richard (Melissa) Rounds of Springfield, Ore.; Cathy (Dave) Eide of Watertown, and Brad (Toni) Rounds of Huron; 35 grandchildren: Janie, Merrianne, Denise, James, Charles, Kaleb, Aleah, Ashley, Aerial, Jesse, Andrew, Hillary, Eric, Jason, Angee, Nick, Ellyse, Elliot, Nathan, Megan, Molly, Austin, Garret, Isaac, Sarah, Andrea, Mitchel, Benjamin, Jake, Abby, Emily, Luke, Calla, Maddy, and Libby; 48 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her sister Jeanette (Neil) Mees of Huron; her sister-in-law, Marge Blue of Iroquois; nephew Steve (Bonnie) Mees and niece Joani (Dan) Ochsner; and several Rounds nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, Toralf and Edna Bergerson; her daughter, Janet Rounds in 1973, and her son, Jabe Rounds in 1992; her grandson Jabe Austin and her granddaughter Elizabeth Wilson; and son-in-law, Steve Salter.
