DAVENPORT, Iowa — John H. Groth, Jr., a beacon of joy and laughter, departed this world on Monday, September 23, 2024, in Davenport, Iowa, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and an indomitable spirit that touched the lives of all he encountered.
To celebrate John’s life, two gatherings are planned for Sundays, from 2 to 6 p.m. On Sept. 29, friends will gather at Boozie’s in Davenport, Iowa, and on Oct. 6 at Shenanigans in Sioux Falls. These occasions will serve as joyful remembrances—moments to share stories, offer support, and revel in the love that he infused into every life he touched.
Born on March 16, 1950, in Fukuoka, Japan, John’s journey was marked by an unwavering aspiration to love his work, a pursuit that led him through varied paths—each reflecting his vibrant personality.
Educated at Harold L. Richards High School in Chicago, where he graduated in 1968, John continued his journey at Huron College, earning his degree in 1973.
There, he thrived as an active member of Phi Kappa Delta fraternity, forming friendships that would last a lifetime.
Throughout his career, John found himself in roles that intertwined his love for people and his energetic spirit—be it selling ads for a radio station, as an account manager for Coca-Cola, managing the Twin State Theater, or selling insurance for Farmers Insurance Group in Huron. Later, his role at the YMCA in Davenport became a defining chapter, where he molded the hearts and minds of countless young individuals, imparting wisdom and kindness through his generous spirit.
If you knew John, you undoubtedly loved him. His smile could light up the darkest of rooms and his infectious laugh turned moments into cherished memories. A father figure not just to his children but to many, John had an unparalleled knack for storytelling and humor that had an extraordinary ability to bring people together, forging friendships that defied time and distance.
John’s pursuits outside of work were as vast as his heart. An avid lover of karate, darts, and racquetball, he also nurtured his creative spirit through theater, barbershop quartet, and karaoke, alongside a passion for wrestling and gymnastics during his high school years. His love for science fiction and anime occupied much of his free time in retirement, along with hanging out with his closest friends at his favorite local establishment.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, we recall his bravery, particularly evident when he received recognition for Extraordinary Action in May 2010 from the Red Cross, showcasing his lifesaving skills in a moment of need—a true testament to his selflessness and dedication to others.
In his final days, John faced his health challenges with courage and without worry.
His family, left to navigate this profound loss, includes his beloved sister, Barbie Groth, and his cherished children: Todd Groth and Heather Groth Hansen, alongside his adoring grandchildren, Connor, Skyler, and Jade Hansen. Together, they honor his memory, knowing that his laughter will forever echo in their hearts.
As we bid farewell to John, let us carry forward the lessons he imparted, the love he shared, and the light he brought into our lives. His spirit will continue to inspire and uplift, reminding us all to embrace life with laughter and love.
