CAVOUR — Joshua J. Kogel, 48, of Cavour, passed away Monday, September 4, 2023, at Huron Regional Medical Center.


His Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Nordby Exhibit Hall.

Honors will be conducted by members of the South Dakota Fire Service.

Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Iroquois.


Visitation with his family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Nordby Exhibit Hall. A Time of Sharing will begin 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.


Joshua James Kogel was born Dec. 5, 1974, to James Kogel and Lorraine Metter in Huron. Josh grew up on the family farm in Cavour, attending Huron schools. Josh was proud to be a member of the 1992 State Championship Huron Tiger Football team. After high school, Josh attended Mitchell Vo-Tech for linesman training. He returned to the family farm to help his family. He then started Krazy J Excavating, a job he complained about but truly loved. In 2023, he took over the Metter family farm. Josh also owned the Lucky 13 Bar in Cavour from 2013-2017.


The job that Josh truly loved however was that of a fireman. He had been a part of the Cavour Volunteer Fire Department since he was 18, with many years serving as the Fire Chief.


In 2011, Josh married Sheri Blue, they raised their daughter, Sierra, together, and later divorced.


Josh is survived by his partner-in-crime, Kelly Sherman of Huron; his children, Payne Feldman of Huron, Sierra Kogel of Huron, Allie (Lane) Knipfer of Wessington Springs, and Shawn Diehl of Huron; two grandchildren, Mason and Liam Knipfer of Wessington Springs; his parents, Ron and Lorraine Marone of Huron; his grandmother, Carolyn Metter of Huron; his siblings, Tenaya Marone of Crofton, Neb., Jayme Kogel of Redding, Calif., Dave (Jody) Marone of Pukwana, Kristi (David) Alley of Isabel, and Scot (Tracy) Marone of Huron; nieces and nephews, Clay Murdock, Rich and Megan Marone, Misty (Brandon) Heck and family, Jamie (Eric) Hoggarth and family, Ali (Corey) Higgans, Krystal (Deon) Dorsey, Lane (Bailey) Alley, Tanner Marone, Jakop Marone, Karissa Kretchmer, Whitney Kretchmer; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.


He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Clifford Metter; brother, Rick Marone; and his son Payne’s mother, Laura Feldman.
