Wessington Springs amateur team eliminated at state tourney

MITCHELL — The Wessington Springs Owls ran into a buzzsaw on Sunday in the South Dakota State ‘B’ Amateur Baseball Tournament in Mitchell, falling to the Larchwood (IA) Diamonds 16-6 in an elimination game.
The Diamonds opened with four runs in the bottom of the first and would end up scoring in every inning of the game before walking off with a run-rule victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mason Schelske opened the game on the mound for Wessington Springs, tossing 1 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks, striking out one. Devin Mehlhaff allowed three runs in an inning of relief on three hits allowed while striking out one.
Terrek Butterfield took over on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Owls, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks. Parker DeJean got one out before allowing the hit that gave the Diamonds the walk-off win.
Trevor Kenobbie had a big game at the plate, knocking a home run, double, and single. Blake Larson was the only other Owl with multiple hits, with a pair of singles and a walk.
Landon Cleveland had a single and a walk.
The Owls finish the season with a 12-6 record.
