To the editor,

Construction season is here and safety is the number one priority when it comes to digging, excavating, and locating utility lines.

Just one strike of a gas line, electrical cable or a water pipeline can have catastrophic consequences for workers and residents. Digging without first checking for these lines can lead to service outages, costly repairs, fines, serious injuries or even fatalities.

Under South Dakota law (SDCL 49-7A) contractors, excavators, operators -- even weekend project do-it-yourselfers -- are required to notify 811, either through a phone call or from the website, which is www.call811.com, prior to any digging project.

The 811 system is free for anyone doing any digging and it is easy to use. After notifying the 811 system, utilities will send out locators within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) to mark infrastructure around the site.

By using the free 811 online portal, you can monitor the progress of the locates and safely begin your underground digging project.

Remember, notifying 811 before you dig can prevent outages and accidents that impact you and your community –it may even save a life.

In our roles as board member and Executive Director of the South Dakota 811 Board, we’ve seen firsthand how so many avoidable accidents could have been prevented simply by calling 811. Protecting underground utilities, people, equipment, and communities takes everyone, so please abide by the 811 laws.

Enjoy your summer and be safe!
