SIOUX FALLS — Liz Boschee of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket won the inaugural Class A girls’ javelin competition Friday at the Class A South Dakota State Track Meet held at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Boschee heaved the implement 126-2, which was a de facto meet record due to it being the first year of competition. She defeated Bentlee Kollbaum of Elk Point-Jefferson, who came in second with a distance of 121-0.

Boschee’s achievement led a strong day across all three classes for Heartland athletes.

The first event of the day, the Class B girls’ 3200-meter run saw two Heartland athletes claim places, as Hadasah Olson of James Valley Christian placed seventh with a time of 12:19.28 and Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold ran 12:21.95 to place eighth. In the Class A girls’ race at the same distance, Kamryn Nesheim of Clark/Willow Lake placed eighth with a time of 11:22.85.

Daril Frandsen of JVC took home fifth in the Class B girls’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.07. In the boys’ Class B race at the same distance, Karter Mebius of Wessington Springs placed eighth with a time of 2:07.62.

Tatum Luce of Wolsey-Wessington and Hazel Luethmers of De Smet finished third and fourth, respectively, in the girls’ Class B high jump, both clearing 5-1, but Luce taking less attempts, allowing her to claim the higher place.

Wolsey-Wessington earned another place in the boys’ Class B pole vault as Carson Walters cleared 11-3 to claim sixth place.

Huron’s Bryan Ramirez placed in the shot put and discus to give Huron its first-place winner of the weekend. Ramirez hurled the discus 155-6 for a new personal best, coming in fifth in the Class AA boys’ field. In shot put, Ramirez tossed 48-9 to bring home eighth place.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s Cody Slykhuis completed his prep track career with a fifth-place finish in the Class A boys’ triple jump, bounding 41-9. In Class B boys’ high jump,

George Jensen of De Smet cleared the bar at 6-0 to tie for fifth place.

In the Class B girls’ discus, Hadlee Holt of Iroquois/Lake Preston threw 130-5 to place third while De Smet’s Ivey Schoenfelder placed sixth with a throw of 122-9.

Area athletes also were able to qualify in prelim races Friday for finals to take place Saturday.

Iroquois/Lake Preston’s Adison Moore had the second-best qualifying time in the girls’ Class B 400-meter dash and the third-best prelim time in the 200-meter dash.

JVC’s Dax Frandsen qualified for finals in the boys’ 400-meter dash while teammate Andee Frandsen qualified in the girls’ Class B 300-meter hurdles.

Ganon Henrich qualified for Saturday’s final of the 200-mater dash in boys’ Class B for De Smet.

The 4x400 Class B girls’ relay Saturday will feature two Heartland teams as Sunshine Bible Academy and James Valley each qualified for the finals.

Saturday’s finals will begin at 10 a.m. for track events and 9:30 a.m. for field events to conclude the 2024 state meet.
