SIOUX FALLS — The South Dakota Health Care Association (SDHCA) held its 26th annual art show and exhibition earlier this month, on the Good Samaritan Society National Campus, featuring art by South Dakotans, age 60 and up. This year’s show included more than 120 artistic entries.

Among the winners were a several of Heartland area artists. Michael Parker of Highmore won in the “Experienced Photography” division for his photo titled ‘UFO or Nightcorn,” while Lane artist Margaret Schmidt earned first place in the Masters Drawing/Pastels/Scratchboard for her entry named “Ethan (My Last great-grandchild),” while Peg Olson of Wessington Springs earned a second-place nod in Masters Acrylic Painting for her creation titled “A 19th Century Watering Can.”

Huron artists Marian Sprecher and James Schmidt each received Honorable Mention recognition. Sprecher entered an Experienced Watercolor Painting named “Poinsettia,” while James Schmidt’s “House Near Howard,” was in the Experienced Oil Painting division.

“The SDHCA Masterworks Art Show is about highlighting the remarkable artistic accomplishments by older South Dakotans,” said SDHCA show coordinator LuAnn Severson. “Aging does not mean giving up our creativity, inspiration and talent.”

Professional judges awarded prizes for first, second and third in each of seven categories, and two age groups, as well as honorable mention and Best of Show designations. People’s Choice was voted upon by those attending the show. Artists at this year’s SDHCA Masterworks Art Show ranged from age 60 to 101 years old.

Award-winning entries will be on exhibit at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre, during the SDHCA Legislative reception on Jan. 23.
