HURON — The Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) Auxiliary recently recognized Shirley McMillan as its Volunteer of the Quarter, according to Bob Eickhoff, HRMC Auxiliary President.
McMillan has been volunteering at the hospital since 2016. She has volunteered in both the radiology waiting are and at the desk in Central Towers and now greets patients and visitors at the volunteer desk in the hospital’s main lobby one afternoon per week.
McMillan, who moved from England 68 years ago, worked at K-Mart in Huron for 37 years. She chose to volunteer at HRMC in her retirement for an outlet to visit with others and be of help in the community. She also previously served as a volunteer at the Huron Area Senior Center for over eight years.
McMillan lives in Huron with her husband Keith. They have two daughters, Karen and Judy, and two grandchildren, Jeff and Laura. McMillan also has a sister, Maureen, who still resides in England. In her spare time, McMillan enjoys playing bingo and loves puzzles, sometimes completing three in a week, especially during the winter.
She truly enjoys her shifts at the hospital, noting “Volunteering is wonderful as I get to see a lot of people. I visit with friends and make new friends in helping others.”
Bob Eickhoff, president of the HRMC Auxiliary thanked McMillan for her dedication over the years, reporting that she has served over 835 hours at the hospital. “The HRMC Auxiliary Volunteer of the Quarter award is in place to recognize the important work of the volunteers at HRMC,” remarked Eickhoff.
HRMC Auxiliary volunteers provide refreshments and assistance in hospital lounges, assist visitors at the information desks and deliver floral arrangements and newspapers to patients. The Auxiliary provides scholarships for students pursuing careers in health care and contributes to various projects at the hospital with funds raised through gift shop/candy counter sales and membership dues. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to promote and advance the welfare of HRMC by rendering service to patients and assisting with charitable projects.
The group is always looking for more volunteers to substitute or fill a four-hour weekly shift. For more information on HRMC’s Auxiliary or to volunteer, call Bonnie Sheridan at 605-354-1233 or visit www.huronregional.org.
