HURON — Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) recently selected Dusan Mirkovic, Pharm. D., to receive the Innovator of the Quarter Award.
He recently submitted an innovative idea to create an organizational system for medications that can’t be stored in the organization’s computerized dispensing system, such as patient medications brought from home.
His suggestion is to utilize a lockable storage container with each compartment labeled by patient room number to ensure each specific patient medication is stored efficiently and quickly accessible by the nursing team.
Upon acceptance of the award Mirkovic remarked, “I am honored to receive the Innovator Award. HRMC does a great job of encouraging innovation, so I was happy to be able to contribute to that.”
Each quarter, the Innovator Award is presented and celebrated, indicating eligibility for an annual Innovator of the Year Award.
Ideas are submitted by employees via online form or paper suggestion card and are selected by a committee of peers based upon impact to patient and employee experience, feasibility, and innovation.
The Innovator Award celebrates the power of innovation in solving practical problems and enhancing the quality of care delivered at HRMC.
Mirkovic has been a pharmacist at HRMC for two years. “I chose to be a pharmacist because it’s a profession where you can help patients each and every day,” he said. ”Growing up, I also always enjoyed my chemistry and math classes. Since the role of a pharmacist includes both, I decided that it would be a good fit for me.”
Originally from Bosnia, Mirkovic immigrated to the United States in 2001 and lives in Mitchell, South Dakota. Outside of work he enjoys playing pickup basketball, watching NBA and tennis, reading and spending time outdoors.
