After 50 years of service, the old Transfer Station closed its gates for good on Wednesday evening, April 16. The Huron Solid Waste Department began full operations at the new Transfer Station at 1552 4th SE, on Thursday, April 17.
Brad McGirr from Creative Printing was the first customer to cross the scale. Reflecting on his trip that morning, McGirr says, “I had a fantastic experience at the new Solid Waste facility. The staff were incredibly helpful and efficient, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. The facility itself was clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into creating a space that serves the community well—I’m genuinely impressed!
“It’s been a long road to get this facility up and running,” said Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin. “But it’s a beautiful building that will streamline our customers’ disposal needs, and we’re glad to finally be operating in it! None of this would have been possible without the incredible team we have in the Solid Waste Department, along with city leaders and the support of other city departments who helped make this project a success.”
While a few internal operations will continue at the old site, all public services have now moved to the new facility. A dedicated rubble drop-off area is located just south of the building, while the majority of customers will be served either inside the facility or at the designated bins located next to it.
“We’ve set up a convenient sorting area where customers can easily sort rubble and metal right outside the building, without the need to search for bins,” Fortin added. “This setup should make the process quicker and safer for everyone.”
Huron resident Adele Flanery, the last customer served at the old site, visited the new facility on Thursday and shared her first impressions. “I like it!” she said. “There’s lots of room to turn around at the rubble pile, and the alternating bins look like they’ll make things easier than before.”
The new facility also brings upgraded technology. For years, household waste has been baled using a wire-tie baler before being shipped to the landfill. The new transfer station features an updated baler that bags municipal solid waste (MSW) for cleaner and faster processing, along with a wire-tie baler for recycled cardboard.
The city is proud to offer this modern facility to improve efficiency, safety, and service for the community.
The Solid Waste Transfer station will maintain the same hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
