SIOUX FALLS — The Huron Tiger volleyball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a halt Thursday night, as the S.F. Jefferson Cavaliers showed why they are ranked No. 2 in Class AA volleyball circles, with a 3-0 win. Set scores for the Cavs were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-8.

“They really came out swinging tonight,” said Tiger coach TyAnn Ulmer. “They swing and swing and they just don’t stop. When we adjusted our blocks to try to slow them down, the adapted and just kept swinging.”

The Tigers started strong in the first set, jumping out to a lead behind kills from DaJai Claggett and Aly Davis and holding a two-point advantage through the first half of the set. A kill from Samantha Mangmoradeth put the Tigers up 13-11, but Emory Brosnahan countered for Jefferson. Back-to-back kills by Mya Hejl started the Cavaliers on a mini run, and with two kills by Ella Kvernmo, Jefferson took a 16-14 lead.

The Tigers hung tough, however, as Hamtyn Heinz scored on a quick set and Madison Jurgens got an ace to drop to forge a 17-17 time after a Brosnahan kill.

But down the stretch of the set, Brosnahan, Hale and Isabel Simmons connected to keep the momentum on the Jefferson side of the net. Hale pounded home her fifth kill of the set for the 25-21 win.

The second set began similar to the first, except this time it was Jefferson who held the slim lead in the early going. An ace from Hylton Heinz and a kill by Aurora Dreyer  kept Huron within reach, but Jefferson countered with kills by Peyten Krull and Simmons.

The Cavaliers held a 14-11 lead after a Mangmoradeth kill, but began to pull away after the midway point of the set. Balls that were sailing long for Jefferson in the first set were now finding the floor and while Huron kept attacking, a pair of 3-0 Cavalier runs, sandwiched around a kill by Makenzie Siemonsma pushed the lead to 21-16 and Brosnahan closed out the second set with a winner down the line.

The Tiger wheels that were wobbly in the latter stages of set two began to come off in the third set, as an early 10-0 Jefferson run, with kills by nearly every Cavalier player taking a swing, led to a 12-1 lead and Huron never did recover, falling 25-8.

“At some point we have to get away from the silly mistakes we make and began playing through them to compete,” said Ulmer. “We came out swinging, but as the match went on, we went back to not playing aggressively and trying to tip it and it went downhill from there.”

Claggett led the Tigers with eight kills, while Davis, Mangmoradeth and Hamtyn Heinz each had three kills.

Huron, now 12-11, returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Pierre to take on the Governors for the second time in two weeks.

Preliminary action found Jefferson completing the sweep, taking the JV match 25-13, 25-14, and the Sophomore contest 25-11, 27-25.
