Post 7 plays weekend tournament in Rapid City

RAPID CITY –– Huron Post 7 participated in the Veterans Classic over the weekend in Rapid City, and the bats woke up for Post 7 mid-tourney, leading to two big wins.
Huron fell 6-0 to co-host Post 22 on Thursday to open action.
Brady Feenstra opened the game on the mound for Post 7, going four innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks, striking out one. Parker Bischoff finished out the game with two hitless innings of relief, walking two and striking out one.
Post 22’s Jadon Moreno had a dominant game on the mound, allowing Huron no hits while striking out seven over seven innings.
Post 7 then fell 4-2 to an Arizona club, the Rocky Mountain Oysters Black team. The Oysters scored all four runs in the first inning, and while Huron fought back, they couldn’t push across the needed runs.
Jack Padersen recovered from a tough first inning to give Post 7 five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks, striking out eight. Tommie Martin tossed the final inning, allowing two hits and a walk, but striking out the side to keep the Oysters from adding any more runs.
Huron’s bats put 16 runners on base, but they couldn’t push them across. Leadoff hitter Trace Wenz had three singles and a walk. Layne Wenzel had a pair of singles and a walk.
Gabe Waldner had a double, single, and a pair of walks while Bubba Peterson added a triple.
The Tigers then ran into a tough matchup as the OBC 19U team had two big innings early en route to an 11-3 victory on Friday.
Oakley Anderson opened the game on the mound for Post 7, tossing 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (only two earned) on four hits and four walks, striking out one. Martin pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks before Bischoff finished out the final two outs.
The Post 7 offense was led by Waldner with a pair of singles. Wenz had a single and a walk while adding a stolen base.
Logan Leyendecker also had a stolen base.
Post 7 broke a five-game losing streak Saturday, when they defeated the Westco Zephyr’s, 18-9.
Peterson pitched three innings to start the game, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Feenstra completed the game, allowing three runs over the final four innings on five hits and one walk.
Huron had 25 baserunners in the game, led by Wenz at the top of the lineup with a triple, two singles, and a walk. He also stole two bases. Cooper Bischoff had two singles and two walks.
Gavin Waldner and Leyendecker each had a pair of singles and a walk. Leyendecker added two stolen bases. Feenstra had a single and two walks.
Anderson had two walks and stole a base. Peterson had a double and a walk while Pedersen had two doubles. Gabe Waldner had a single and a while.
The offense exploded on Sunday for Post 7, putting up 32 runs in a 32-14 victory over PVC Chadron Post 12.
Wenzel opened the game on the mound, but he lasted just one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Leyendecker came in relief and allowed 12 runs over 4 2/3 innings on 11 hits and three walks, striking out five. Gavin Waldner finished out the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
Wenz had a huge game, with two triples, two singles, two walks, and two stolen bases as he led off a lineup that put 38 batters on base. Anderson reached base with a single and then walked four times, adding in a stolen base.
Martin had a pair of doubles, a single, and a walk. Pedersen had a triple, single, and two walks, as did Gavin Waldner. Parker Bischoff and Feenstra each had a pair of singles, two walks, and stole a base.
Peterson had a pair of singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. Leyendecker had a double, a single, and a walk.
The 50 runs scored by Post 7 over the final two games of the weekend was nearly double the season total (27) coming into those two games!
Huron hoste Aberdeen Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Memorial Ballpark. Results will appear in the Friday Plainsman.
