SIOUX FALLS – The Huron Post 7 Tigers split a pair of games with Sioux Falls Post 15 West on Tuesday, taking the opener 5-3 but dropping the finale 7-4.
West grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the first game, but Huron answered with a big inning in the top of the fourth, scoring five run and holding on for the 5-3 victory.
Layne Wenzel picked up the victory on the mound, going seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks, striking out six.
Wenzel was the lone Tiger to pick up multiple hits in the game as well, with a pair of singles, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch to get on base four times in the game.
Tanner Gilbert and Logan Leyendecker each reached base three times with a single and two walks.
Post 7 outhit Post 15 in the nightcap 7-6, but after taking a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth, Huron’s defense committed multiple errors in a 5-run bottom of the sixth for West as they came away with the 7-4 victory.
Mason Davis had a strong start on the mound, allowing two runs over five innings on three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Leyendecker relieved in the sixth inning and recorded just one out, allowing five runs on two hits. Kolby Hofer got the final two outs on strikeouts.
Bubba Peterson smashed a triple and added a single while Ethan Busch had a double, a single, and stole a base to pace the Huron offense.
Post 7’s record sits at 9-22 heading into Thursday’s game in Aberdeen.
