Pugh leads Miller girls to Region 5B title

HURON — With two of the top three golfers in the field, Miller claimed the Region 5B girls’ title on Monday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

The Rustlers had a team score of 280, which put them 19 strokes ahead of Faulkton Area in the final girls’ standings. Potter County had 308 to edge Selby Area by two strokes for the third spot and Eureka was fifth at 315.

Freshman Jayce Pugh earned the medalist honors for Miller with a 78. She finished 13 strokes in front of a trio, which shared the second spot with scores of 91.

Included in the runner-up trio was freshman Kaihlyn Anderberg of Miller, senior Gabby Kast of Faulkton Area and junior Olivia Mikkelsen of Potter County.

Rounding out the lineup for Miller was Cassi VanDerWerff, who finished 15th with a 111 and Mackenzie Kopecky with a 120.

Kendall Cermak of Highmore-Harrold finished at 109, which put her No. 13 in the final standings and secured a spot in the Class B State Tournament field.

Freshman Gavin Colson earned the medalist honors en route to lead Sully Buttes to the Region 5B boys’ title on Monday.

The Chargers, who also had a  golfer tied for second and another in the top 10, earned the team title with a score of 250. Edmunds Central was second at 262, followed by Ipswich at 262, Faulkton Area at 274 and Miller at 282.

Highmore-Harrold was sixth in the 11-team boys’ standings with a 287.

Colson shot an 82 on Monday, which placed him one shot in front of a four-way tied for second. Sharing the second spot were Chet Peterson of Ipswich, Cooper Long of Lyman, Tray Hettick of Selby Area and Thomas Farries of Sully Buttes.

Wesley Wittler was sixth for the Chargers with an 85 to help them secure the title.

Senior Gunner Brueggeman of Highmore-Harrold and freshman Derek Brueggeman of Miller finished with scores of 89, which placed them in a four-way tie for the No. 11 spot and earned them a berth in the Class B State Tournament. Also securing a spot in the state tournament field was sophomore James Fritzsche of Miller, who finished 16th with a 92.

Senior Tate Hoffman finished with a 98 for Highmore-Harrold, while sophomore teammates Miles McPeak and Caleb Roth had scores of 124 and 125, respectively.

Freshman Jorryn Heilman turned in a 101 for Miller, while eighth-grader Gavin Nyens had a 102.

The Class B State Golf Tournaments are scheduled for June 5-6 in Watertown.
