Races return to Dakota State Fair Speedway next Saturday

HURON — Race fans at Dakota State Fair Speedway are in for a rare treat during the first of three events to be held during the 2025 season.

The Midwest Sprint Touring Series 410 sprint cars will take to the track, along with the Repairablevehicles.com Tri-State Late Models for the Summer Shake event on May 2 presented by West-Way Trailers, Under the Sun Rental and Dr. Robert Hohm.

“That’s kind of rare thing, but I think I can prep the track enough to compensate for both classes,” said longtime DSFS track promoter Orville Chenoweth. “We’ll try not to get any rubber on the track and stuff, so a guy might have to break it up a few more times than what’s normal.”

Promoters from both of the series slated to compete during the opening event are excited with the prospect of running on the same night.

“”We’re going to be running with the MSTS 410 Sprint, so that should be pretty exciting. for the fans to be able to watch 410 Sprint cars in late models,” Mike Gross, who is the promoter for the Tri-State late models. “They are the two favorite classes in the Midwest. That’s kind of a rarity to get to see both those classes on the same night.”

Dale Furby, who is the promoter for the MSTS 410, is looking forward to its second visit to the speedway after making its first during its inaugural season of existance in 2024.

“I wasn’t able to be there during last year’s event, but I heard there was a good crowd and a decent car count,” Furby said. “Hopefully we can build on that and, you know, have a little bit better car count and, you know, a good crowd again. That’s really what it’s all about, is putting on a good show for the fans.”

The May 24 event at the Huron track will be the third of 22 events on the Tri-State Late Model Series schedule in 2025 and will be the first of three visit to DSFS this season.

“DSFS has a long history of late model racing and our drivers really like coming up there,” Gross said “And Orville (Chenoweth) always gives a guy a good purse to make it worth while, too.”

During the first of three stops at the Huron speedway, the Tri-State late models will be running for a top prize of $2,000. They will return to DSFS for Wheel Jam events on June 5 and 7, which will pay $3,000- and $5,000-to-win, respectively.

Gross is expecting a strong showing of drivers for all three events.

“We have a fair amount of rookies that are coming out this year and then we have our usual,” Gross said. “I would assume, Blair Nortoff, who is the defending series champion out of Renner would be there, Justin Zeitner, might possibly be coming and Chad Becker’s gonna be there, along with Trevor Anderson and all the strong locals.”

The MSTS 410s will be making the trek to Huron after an event on May 23 in Jackson Motorplex in Minnesota.

“We’re hoping drivers will follow us from Jackson over to Huron and help support that show,” said Furby. “That’s kind of been our deal is wherever we go were trying to run two, three or four days of racing so it makes it a bit easier on the pocketbook.”

Furby, who has operated the MSTS 360 series prior to starting the MSTS 410 series last season, says the new series started to gain some steam by the end of the 2024 season.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, you know, getting going and getting our name out there,” he said. “But, I think the year finished very strong. We averaged right at 26 cars a night for the season and the racing was great.”

The stop at DSFS will be the third of the season for the MSTS 410 series.

“We’ve really pushed the envelope to give a lot of incentives for drivers to follow the series,” Furby said. “The series is growing and growing fast. I really would like to see us still in that 26-30 cars a night and just keep building on it.

“This is what I call an entry level 410 series for the World of Outlaws,” he said.

Tim Kaeding of San Jose, Calif., was the winner of last season’s event at DSFS, while Scott Bogucki of Mclaran Vale, South Africa, who was racing the Shane Liebig car out of Rapid City, was season.

Some of the area’s top sprint car drivers will be returning to DSFS, according to Furby.

“I think we’ll see a blend of drivers who have been already in the deal and new ones coming in,” he said. “So I think it should be some really good racing.”

Piloting Liebig’s car this season is 18-year-old phenom Ryan Timms, who collected his first win at Knoxville Raceway on May 6. He then climbed for 16th to second during event on May 11 at Huset’s Speedway in Sioux Falls.

Racing at DSFS is slated to begin at 7 p.m., on May 24.
