HURON — Robert Dean Johnson, 77, formerly of Huron, S.D., died Thursday, May 1, 2025 at the Stone Cottage Care Center in Sigourney, Iowa.
The interment of ashes and a brief graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12, in the Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron.
Born on December 12, 1947, in Huron, South Dakota, Robert was the son of John Harold Johnson and Fern Alberta (Ellerton) Johnson. He graduated from Huron Senior High School on May 27, 1965, having participated in track, Science Club, Chess Club (president), and senior elections. On May 25, 1969, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of South Dakota. In college, Robert joined the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps, serving domestically after graduation. He was an American Legion member.
Robert worked as the Assistant City Assessor in Huron and was the City Assessor in Brookings, South Dakota. He also worked in the Hot Springs area as a South Dakota State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser.
Robert delved deeply into Bible studies and completed many correspondence Bible classes.
A long-time member of the American Contract Bridge League, Robert achieved Regional Bridge Master status. He was an avid chess player and won many chess tournaments. Robert had a keen interest in military history and enjoyed playing historical battle simulation board games.
Survivors include siblings, Shirley Pry of Elberfeld, Ind., and David Johnson (Cheryl) of Fairfield, Iowa, and many nephews and nieces. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
