Roehrich repeats as champion in Class B for Cyclones

WATERTOWN — Clark/Willow Lake sophomore Brynn Roehrich of Clark/Willow Lake successfully defended her Class B state championship on Tuesday at Prairie Winds Golf Course in Watertown.

Roehrich, who led after the opening round, shot a 72 for the second straight day to finish with a 144 total. She finished the two-day tournament at even par.

Jadyn McDonald of Chester, who finished third a year ago, turned in back-to-back scores of 74 this season, which allowed her to move past former state champion Jayce Pugh of Miller for the second spot.

Pugh, who was second after the opening round with a 73, carded a 78 during the final 18 holes on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 151. She was third in the final standings, eight strokes ahead of Isabelle McNaughton of St. Mary’s, who was fourth.

Kaihlyn Anderberg of Miller also inked a top-10 finish. She had an 81 Tuesday, which was seven strokes better than her score in the opening round, to finish sixth at 169.

Olivia Knox of Doland also improved seven strokes during the second round with an 86, which placed her in a tie for 16th with a 179.

Brooke Jennings shared the 24th spot for De Smet with a 186, while Sydney Asmus of Miller tied for 28th with a 189.

Other area golfers in the tournament were Harper Anderson of De Smet (200); Belle Niederbaumer of James Valley Christian (203); Taylor Braun of Wessington Springs (205); Taylor Brueggeman of Miller (215); Baylar Lamb of Clark/Willow Lake (231); and Tatiana Roberts of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (245).

St. Mary’s used a 13-stroke improvement during the second round to pull away from Miller for the Class B team champions. The Cardinals had a winning total of 501, while Miller finished at 509 after improving seven strokes in the second round.

After recording a 288 on Monday, Clark/Willow Lake rallied with a 247 on Tuesday to claim the third spot with a 535 total. Chester was fourth at 552, followed by Philip at 566.

Braun, Aberdeen Central cruise to Class AA titles
SIOUX FALLS — The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles placed three in the top five individuals, including champion Olivia Braun, to coast to a team title in the State Class AA Girls’ Golf Championship at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls.

Aberdeen won the team title with a 625 team score, defeating second-place Mitchell by 18 strokes. Rapid City Stevens finished third with a team score of 674 and O’Gorman shot 696 to place fourth.

Braun was the lone golfer in the tournament to shoot under par, besting her one-under on the first day with a three-under performance to finish four under. Maddie Childs of Mitchell finished four over par to come in second.

Spearfish’s Alison Kennedy shot eight over to come in third before Aberdeen Central teammates Emma Dohrer and Kyley Wirebaugh finished fourth and fifth with scores of 10 over and 13 over, respectively.

Taylor Sorben was the lone Huron golfer to play both days of the tourney, shooting a 47-over score of 191 to tie for 45th. Olivia Purintun withdrew after shooting 113 the first day.

St. Thomas More wins in A
MADISON — The St. Thomas More Cavaliers and Sioux Falls Christian Chargers were locked in a tight battle throughout the Class A State Girls’ Golf Tournament at Madison Golf & Country Club, with the Cavs using an impressive final day to come away with the team title.

St. Thomas More shot 680 to pull out the win over the Chargers, who finished at 685. Aberdeen Roncalli took third at 700, with first-day leader Vermillion fourth (712) and Madison fifth (718).

Rylan Horning of St. Thomas More had the top score of the second day to combine for a 157, winning the individual title by three strokes over Claire Crawford of Aberdeen Roncalli. Horning’s teammate Kaitlin Strain finished third at 161.

Addisyn Evans of Redfield tied for 62nd with a 225 for the two-day tournament.
