Huron baseball falls to Roosevelt

SIOUX FALLS –– The Huron Tigers struck first on the night with a big inning, but the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders controlled the rest of the evening Monday, taking both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 6-5 and 20-5.
In the opener, the Tigers put up four runs in the first inning, but Roosevelt clawed back to take a 6-4 lead, and Huron fell one run short in a 6-5 loss.
Jack Pederson opened the game on the hill with 4 1/3 innings of six-run pitching, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out three. Oakley Anderson threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one walk.
Trace Wenz and Cooper Bischoff each reached three times on two singles and a walk for Huron. Davis Chase had a double and a single and Kolby Hofer had a double.
Logan Leyendecker had a single, a walk, and was hit by pitch. Brady Feenstra had a stolen base.
The home squad trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but quickly turned that around with six runs and would go on to score at least four runs in each inning before winning by run rule, 20-5.
Davis Chase retired one batter, allowing a walk that came around to score. Tommie Martin came in and allowed 10 runs over 1 1/3 innings on eight hits and two walks, striking out one. Leyendecker allowed four runs over one inning of relief on a hit and two walks, striking out one. Oakley Anderson was the fourth Huron pitcher in the game, allowing five runs over an inning on seven hits and a walk while striking out two.
Bubba Peterson led the offense with a pair of singles and a stolen base. Leyendecker and Martin each walked twice, with Leyendecker adding a stolen base.
Wenz added a single and a walk.
The Tigers take a 1-15 record to Brandon Valley on Saturday.
