Buchanan K-1 Center
First graders at Buchanan K-1 Center in Ms. Ness, Mrs. Lindblad, Mrs. Boomsma, Mrs. Small and Mrs. Korkow’s classes have been busy learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin, Veterans Day, and American symbols.

All of first grade is planning a fun Literacy Day filled with reading and writing activities centered on the book “Turkey Trouble” toward the end of the month. Activities range from sequencing the story, writing how to cook the perfect Thanksgiving turkey, and how to disguise him from being the main course. Students will enjoy a treat at the end of the day based on the book’s surprise ending! This is always an exciting day for first grade!

HHS Science
Students in Principals of Biomedical science at Huron High School are working on the final part of the unit on forensic science. They are trying to determine the manner and cause of death of a fictional character named Anna Garcia. Students collected evidence at a mock crime scene and have completed activities such as fingerprinting, hair analysis, DNA extraction and analysis, blood typing and blood spatter analysis. They are currently studying the procedures used during an autopsy that will culminate with the dissection of a heart. They will write up their results in a mock police report stating how they think she died and who was responsible. At the conclusion of this unit they will be introduced to clinical medicine.

Earth science students are currently studying stars. They will be covering the structure of the sun and solar activity as well as the characteristics and life cycle of stars. Students will also have the opportunity to learn where constellations are located and the major stars that are found in them. They have also been following the solar activity of the sun and are looking forward to seeing Northern lights in person during the next few months.

HMS Math
Sixth-graders are becoming more at home in the middle school environment as they continue moving through quarter two. They are working hard in math and are looking forward to learning new things in the upcoming months.

So far this year they have learned about ratios and rates, fractions, decimals and percent. At times this has proven to be difficult, but they all have been working hard to master each objective. Technology is a big part of their day. In math they are using programs such as IXL, Khan Academy, and Get More Math to help reinforce lessons being taught in the classroom. Overall, students have shown success in math class as they adjust to each new challenge.
