It’s been an exciting past few weeks in the Huron Middle School counseling office – we are in the “planning era” of our school year as we begin to put together our big spring events.

Middle Schooler + Role Model Night Out (formally Boys and Girls Night Out), will be the evening of April 9, and will consist of food, fun, and education on topics related to the middle schooler’s wellbeing. Middle schoolers are encouraged to bring their role model of choice and spend a few quality hours together.

Career Day falls on May 9, and each grade will have a different schedule of exciting events! Sixth grade students will attend demonstrations from a variety of businesses in the community, as well as spend time with a fan favorite activity – the zoo mobile!

They will also experience vehicle demonstrations in the middle school parking lot – in the past, we have had demonstrations from the Huron Police Department, Huron Fire Department, Huron School District food truck, and many other amazing businesses in our community.

Seventh grade students will be bussed off campus to experience three different tours of local businesses. They will be encouraged to ask questions and reflect upon their own goals for their future.

Finally, eighth grade students will have activities that target specific occupational skills such as job interviewing, medical career presentations, and a college panel. This is to help our eighth graders become excited about what employment  opportunities may be available to them in Huron, as well as continue thinking about high-school and college goals.

We are so excited to see these big events come to life over the next few months.

Geography: Our current focus in Geography centers on exploring the diverse cultures of the Asian continent. Last week, we delved into discussions about The Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China, exploring their cultures and daily lives. This week, our attention turns to North and South Korea, where we aim to uncover the unique differences and challenges each culture faces.

World History I: In World History I, our discussions revolve around Ancient China. Specifically, we’re examining different dynasties and the evolution of Chinese culture. Students are currently working on presentations highlighting inventions from Ancient China.

World History II: Students in World History II are now immersed in the events leading up to World War I, the war itself, and its aftermath. Simultaneously, we’re delving into the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire (Modern Day Turkey) and its enduring effects on the victims, which continue to resonate in the modern era.

Huron Colony Schools

The Huron Colony Kindergarteners have been working on letter sounds and reading comprehension. First graders are nearing the end of their decodable readers program and are also working on addition and starting to add double digits.

The third graders have been joining the fourth graders in reading chapter books. They are improving their vocabulary while being entertained.

The older kids are also reading chapter books together. They are able to identify aspects of a text that reveals an author’s point of view.

We are reading “The Rhinon in Right Field,” and “The Worst Class Trip Ever.” The paras have been instrumental in the students’ progress.

In Math, the third graders are working on rounding and estimating sums. They are also identifying even and odd numbers, while improving their multiplication.

The fourth graders are working on Math using expanded form, and word form to write numbers up into the millions.

The seventh and eighth graders are adding and subtracting integers, both positive and negative. The colony also added IXL computer program as a supplemental educational resource.
