Riverside Colony

Riverside Colony grades K-3 have been busy! In math, kindergarten has been identifying and describing 3-dimensional shapes. First grade has been busy with measuring the length of objects and telling/writing time to the hour and half hour. Second grade has been working on adding and subtracting three-digit numbers with regrouping. Lastly, third grade has just ended their unit learning about fractions.

In reading, kindergarten continues to work on mastering their sight word recognition and letter sounds when decoding words. They are also exploring why stories are important, along with comparing two similar stories with different endings. First grade is working on long vowel sounds and di/trigraphs. They are discussing the author’s purpose and answering questions about a text. Second grade is working on decoding and writing words with the long “i” sound. They have been deepening their level of vocabulary throughout the year and have recently been reading fables to determine their themes. Third grade is working on identifying main idea and key details in a text. We just read about Fredrick Douglas and his contribution to the abolitionist movement.

HMS Bands

The Huron Middle School bands have been hard at work this spring, focusing on improving their musical technique and preparing for upcoming performances. With a total of 204 students across the three grades, the program continues to thrive under the dedication of its young musicians.

All three grade-level bands are now focused on their next big event: the 6-12 Spring Band Concert. Scheduled for Monday, April 28, this will be the final opportunity to see these talented young musicians perform this school year. Mark your calendars and come support the Huron Middle School Bands as they take the stage for an evening of wonderful music!

The sixth grade band, consisting of 82 students, has been honing their sight-reading skills while working on a variety of musical selections. Recently, they have taken on the challenge of their first two-octave scale and two-octave chromatic scale, an impressive milestone for young musicians.

The seventh grade band, with 69 students, had an exciting start to the new year, learning numerous pieces throughout January and February. Now, they have settled into their concert repertoire, preparing to showcase their progress and musicianship.

The eighth grade band, currently at 53 students, has had an eventful semester. In February, they had the opportunity to join the Huron High School Band for a basketball pep band experience, learning firsthand what it’s like to play in a high-energy game atmosphere.

HHS Physical Science

This marks the second year that Huron High School has brought back Physical Science as part of the core Science curriculum. As of late, we have moved into the Chemistry content, we’ve been building up for the past several weeks (states of matter, physical/chemical properties of materials, atomic structure, and basics of the Periodic Table).

Moving into the fourth quarter, we will continue exploring more patterns on the Periodic Table (metals, nonmetals, and metalloids), types of chemical bonds between atoms, and the unique conventions behind naming and writing chemical formulas.
