Huron High School JAG
JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) is a new program/class at Huron High School over the last two years. JAG’s mission statement is “empowering our nation’s young people with the skills and support to succeed in education, employment, and life.”
Established in 1980, JAG provides elective classes for credit taught by a specialist at Huron High School. Students acquire vital job skills, get hands-on experience, and receive a year of post-graduation support. This year we will be graduating our first senior, who will go into follow-up with her specialist for one year. The specialist can help her with anything that comes up and guide her through that first year of life after high school. The program is currently made up of 24 students, grades 9 through 12. The students were either nominated by a teacher or registered for the course on their own to further their skills both in and out of school.
Throughout the year the students have the opportunities to attend conferences, go on college visits, and listen to guest speakers from different career areas. The students also create the course curriculum by guiding lessons and projects with interests and questions they have answered. Some topics covered this year include team building, career interests, the election, leadership skills, growth mindset, financial literacy and each class did a book study.
