6th Grade
Ever since the 4th Quarter started, 6th graders have been gearing up for Smarter Balanced Testing in both Math and Language Arts. Smarter Balanced Testing started April 2 and finishes April 12 for the 6th graders at HMS.

Math classes have been working quite extensively on Geometry Skills such as area, surface area, volume, distance on a coordinate plane and area on a coordinate plane.

This week the 6th graders started Measurement and Data. They will be working with measures of center (mean, median, mode and range), mean absolute deviation, box plots, dot plots and histograms.

Language Arts classes have been working on brushing up their writing skills.

They have written all types of essays this year including argumentative, expository, and, most recently, narrative. This week, specifically, they have focused on adding dialogue into their writing to make it more interesting.

Students can always enhance their learning by using IXL.com, which is a computerized program used to enrich the academic success of students.

Once the Smarter Balanced Testing is over the students will have a little break and then they will start to prepare for their NWEA Testing, which will run from April 29 to May 10.

Karissa Schroder, 6th Grade Language Arts, and Melody Witte-Trowbridge, 6th Grade Math, Huron Middle School

Intro. To Public Safety:

This week we are finishing up with the section on court systems and structures and the career pathways that this entity includes.

We have gone to the court house to observe court while in session.

The class has had Judge Kent Shelton and Court Reporter Marie Bales come and speak with the class about their careers and we will have a visit from the Beadle County State’s Attorney, Mike Moore and, hopefully defense attorney Jeff Banks as well, yet this week to wrap up this section of career pathways.
