The end of school year 2024-2025 in the High School concluded with Career Research Paper in ELA9. Career Research provides a valuable opportunity to support students’ growth in areas such as goal setting, self-awareness, and future planning. The course focused on helping students reflect on their strengths, understanding their interests, and begin thinking critically about their futures.
The classroom support Mrs. Kary, the school librarian, offered enhanced the learning experience by providing guidance on research strategies and digital tools. Her collaboration helped students navigate online databases more effectively and increased their digital literacy with the use of World Book Student through the Huron School Library System. This resource supported research and reflection by giving students access to reliable, student-friendly information. It also played a key role in helping students locate background knowledge on industries, workplace expectations, and skills required for success. It also encouraged students to become more independent and curious researchers as they dig deeper into the body of information.
On the right-hand side is Mr. Doll, who served as a para-educator in the class. He provided consistent one-on-one support to students who needed help staying on task and organizing their thoughts. His presence helped create a more inclusive learning environment to let students understand the basic concepts of research.
Moreover, students developed a stronger sense of direction through structured daily works such as narrowing career topics, collecting information using MLA format, writing thesis statements, organizing information through a research outline, and listing and collecting resources about their career. This showed increased confidence and a greater sense of ownership over their personal and academic decisions. Through research skills, students visualize life beyond high school in a concrete and meaningful way.
With all the support from Huron High School, students had a smooth flow of conducting a Descriptive Career Research. Learning the basics engaged them in a meaningful self-discovery and planning. It also reinforced their understanding to themselves in providing time and structure to prepare for life beyond high school.
