HURON –– The defendants in the May 9 homicide case in Huron have both been sentenced at the Beadle County courthouse.

On Tues., Dec. 17, Rhianna Caban was found guilty of murder in the first degree. She was sentenced to 25 years to be served in the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre, with 187 days credit for time served. She was further ordered to pay for her court costs and court-appointed attorney fees.

Brookings County State’s Attorney Dan Nelson handled the prosecution of the case, and his office released a statement saying, “The investigation revealed the coordination and planning by the two juveniles to carry out this heinous murder. The prosecution and its outcome strived to obtain justice and closure for the victim’s family moving forward.”

Nelson stated that the co-defendant, Michael Lee received the same sentence, but his judgment is not yet signed.
