HURON — Incumbent Shelly Siemonsma won another term on the Huron School Board and first-time candidate Shawn Harvey was the winner in the race for Huron City Commission, in a joint school/city election held Tuesday.
It was a light turnout, as a total of 1,009 votes were cast in the school board election and a scant 935 ballots were counted in the city commission race.
Siemonsma garnered 577 (57%) to defeat challenger Ray Cardona, who received 432 votes (43%) to retain her seat on the Huron School District’s board of Education.
She has been a member of the school board for six years.
In the race for Huron City Commission, Shawn Harvey, a Huron real estate broker and realty co-owner , defeated Ashley Kingdon-Reese, a business owner and entrepreneur, 555 to 380, or 59% to 41%.
Results of the election will be canvassed at the next meetings of the respective boards and both will take the oath of office in July.
Harvey won the seat formerly held by Mark Robish, who chose not to seek re-election to the commission.
