SIOUX FALLS — Six area wrestlers, including two from Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington and two from Kingsbury County, remain in the championship hunt after the opening day of the Class B State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Senior Kaydin Carter of WS/W/W-W opened the tournament with a pin at the 4:44 mark of the match against Lane Stuwe of Potter County at 120 pounds.

Carter then reached the semifinals with a 1-0 decision against Zach Bartels of Canton.

Carter will face top-seeded Kasen Konstanz of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes in the semifinals.

Also advancing to the semifinals for the Warhawks was Holden Havlik at 215. He pinned Quentin White Mountain of McLaughlin in 30 seconds to open the tourney and then won by medical forfeit against Connor Johnson of Kingsbury County in the quarterfinals.

Havlik will face Caleb Rickenbach of Hot Springs in the semifinals.

Gannon Gilligan of Kingsbury County used a pair of pins at 126 to move into the semifinals. He won his opening match against Aston Hill of Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington in 3:03 and then pinned Cole Hendrixson of Tri-Valley in 3:19 during the quarterfinals.

Gilligan will meet Gavin Braun of KWLP in the semifinals.

Also advancing to the semifinals for the Knights was freshman Conner Giedd at 138. He pinned Jackson Williams of Tri-Valley in 1:20 to open the tournament and then edged Tyler Tjeerdsma of Bon Homme/Avon with a 5-4 decision in the quarterfinals.

In the other half of Giedd’s bracket, top-seeded Kellan Hurd of Miller/Highmore-Harrold pinned Austin Vig of Clark/Willow Lake in 3:06 to open the tournament. He then recorded a 13-1 major decision against Lincoln Wickstrom of Harding County.

Hurd and Giedd will meet in a semi-final matchup today.

Top-seeded Grady Fey of Redfield was on the mat just over a minute and a half to record a pair of pins at 285. He needed just 17 seconds to get past Aiden Novak of Mt. Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney in his opening match and then pinned Emmitt Maher of Lemmon/McIntosh in 1:22.

Fey will face Isaac Nehlich of Tri-Valley in the semifinals.

After the opening day of competition in the 3-day event, Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall led the Class B team standings with 73 points. Canton was second at 61, followed by Custer at 54.5, Winner Area at 49.5 and Wagner at 42.5.
Miller/HIghmore-Harrold was seventh at 30, while Redfield was 11th at 25 and WS/W/W-W shared the 12th spot with 24.

The first and second round consolation matches will be held at 9:30 a.m. Today, with the semifinals and third round consolation matches to follow at 3 p.m.

The placing matches are slated for 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the championship matches at 1 p.m.
