Ashley Armstrong, PhD, from the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is in Huron, working with students on lessons learned at SURF and what the facility does. Tuesday, she spent time at the Huron Middle School with sixth-grade classes discussing heat.
Students learned about what heat is, how it can be created, and the effects of heat transfer. As a demonstration, students measured the temperature of a cup of water before and after a heated rock was placed into the water.
SURF representatives will be at Madison 2-3 Center today and in Mitchell for the Educator’s Rising presentation that will include Huron attendees.
They will then address seventh-grade classrooms on Thursday along with the High School JAG class before finishing the week with a presentation to the High School physics class Friday morning.
This outreach is an annual exercise for SURF, and Armstrong stated that it is fun to see students who have experienced a previous presentation now able to answer questions she presents.
