INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Theodore Edward Apley, known affectionately as Ted, age 79, passed away Monday, September 16, 2024 in Indepence, Mo. He lived a life rich in service, both to his country and his community.
A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Summit Grove Community of Christ Church, 411 S Lee’s Summit RD, Independence, MO, 64050.
Ted was born December 14, 1944, to Bill and Hazel Apley, in Pierre. He graduated Miller High School in 1962. Ted was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving for five years in Berlin, Germany, after high school graduation. His service was a testament to his dedication and patriotism.
He went on to graduate from the University of Texas El Paso with a BA in Geology and a Master’s degree in Water Resources from the University of Wyoming. He then pursued a career as a hydrologist with the National Weather Service, where he worked for 37 years and made significant contributions to understanding water resources. Ted was passionate about his work.
He found joy in running with the Blue Spring Runners for more than 25 years and was an enthusiastic soccer referee, mentor, assessor, and assigner. He shared his love for the sport with countless youth and referees.
On July 7, 1979, he married Kathleen Joy Bailey. They had two children Khristopher (Debbie) and Katrina Apley. Ted cherished spending time with his grandchildren—Benjamin, Cyrus, Elizabeth, and Gabriel—who brought him immense joy.
He is survived by his siblings Larry, Judith, Susan, and Shirley.
He will be missed dearly by all who knew him for his stubbornness, witty remarks, and dry sense of humor. Ted was a man who would give the shirt off his back to help others, leaving a lasting impact on his family and community.
He is preceded in death by his beloved grandchildren Malachi Apley and Layla Owens, his loving wife, Kathleen, his parents William and Hazel Apley and nephew James Apley.
