SIOUX FALLS — The Huron Tigers found out why the Sioux Falls Washington Warrior volleyball team is among the top ranked teams in the Class AA on Tuesday night, falling to the third-ranked Warriors 3-0 in non-conference volleyball.

Set scores for Washington, now 7-2 on the season, were 25-12, 25-14 and 25-17. Huron falls below .500, at 8-9.

“We were not ready for their jumping and their quickness,” said Tiger head coach TyAnn Ulmer. “Now the girls have seen how that plays out, we know what we need to do to be ready to face a team like this next time.”

Strategy to face the Warriors will be difficult when Washington makes as few mistakes as they made Tuesday night.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick lead behind a pair of Aly Davis kills, but with the score knotted 4-4, Washington went on a 13-1 run, with all of the Warriors’ points coming on offensive options, either a kill or an ace serve.

On the occasion that Washington did misfire, Huron took advantage, as DaJai Claggett and Hamtyn Heinz managed to find holes in the Warriors defense, but Cate Legel put home her fifth kill of the first set to secure the 25-12 win.

“We got timid after that first set,” Ulmer said. “When we were between sets we told them to just relax, go out and compete.”

The momentum that Washington built in set one bled over into the second set, as Legel and Kaelyn Snoozy staked the Warriors to a quick 4-0 lead. A mini-run for the Tigers, with kills from Samantha Mangmoradeth and Andrea Dreyer kept the deficit manageable, but once again, Huron got stuck on four points, while Washington went on a 6-0 run and suddenly a four-point deficit became 10.

Dreyer had a good set blocking the Warrior attack when the opportunity came up, but Washington was hitting on all cylinders and pulled away with a 5-0 run late to take the set 25-14.

Down 2-0 Huron came out for the third set and began to play more aggressively, trading swings with the Warriors throughout the first half of the set, trailing by two-to-three points.

But with Huron trailing 14-11, Washington went on a 5-0 run, keyed by three kills from Grace Nesdahl and an ace from Legel to get a little breathing space.

Makenzie Siemonsma got a late kill and Heinz snuck two tips past the Warriors front line, but the deficit was too great to over come and Washington put the match away with the 25-17 win.

Snoozy led the Warriors with 11 kills, while both Legel and Nyariek Kur chipped in eight. Halle Bruflat connected on five ace serves in the match, as Washington had 11 aces in the match, while holding Huron ace-less.

Dreyer led Huron with seven kills, including three block/kills in the match, while Heinz added five kills and three other Tigers had three kills each.

Washington dominated the lower level games, as they won the Freshman match 25-16, 25-16; claimed the JV match 25-18, 25-18 and held on to win the Sophomore match 25-23 and 25-22 .

After spending the last two weeks traveling to road matches, Huron returns to the friendly confines of Huron Arena Thursday, to host Sioux Falls Lincoln. Match time is 7 p.m.
