MITCHELL — The Huron wrestling team picked up its fourth win of the season and second in a row against Mitchell on Thursday night.
The Tigers recorded a 46-30 victory after getting past the Kernels 42-33 to open the season at the Watertown Duals.
“Some of our young guys that wrestled through our youth program are really starting to show,” Huron coach Matt Goth said. “We’ve had a lot of matches early on, so we’re really starting to get this experience early and hopefully we can just continue growing throughout the season.”
Carter Nelson picked up an 11-2 major decision for Huron at 106 pounds, turning the tables on an opponents from the earlier meeting.
“He bounced back after that loss, wrestled a hard match and really kept looking for points even in the third period, which is what we are looking for from our young guys,” Goth said. “We want to keep working for those bonus points.”
Brady Meyer at 126, Aiden Zavesky at 138, Lah Doh Soe at 144, Ryan Florey at 165 and Bryan Ramirez at 215 earned wins by pin against their Mitchell opponents.
“Those guys went out there and they wrestled hard,” Goth said. “It’s good to get some wins over a region opponent and another ESD opponent.”
Moses Gross at 157 and Lucas Chaparro at 190 were awarded wins by forfeit for the Tigers.
The Huron girls’ wrestling team also collected a 30-24 victory against Mitchell on Thursday.
“They came out ready to go,” said Huron girls’ coach Dru Strand. “It was their first time in a dual environment, so it’s always nice to come out with the win.”
Naw Htoo Ywe at 107 and Say Glay at 138 recorded pins for the Tigers, while Chalie Say at 114, Kayeleigh Bowden at 145 and Katelyn Florey at 250 collected wins by forfeit.
Huron will travel to face Aberdeen Central in a dual on Tuesday to close the 2023 portion of the schedule.
