Tigers sitting sixth after opening day of ESD tourney

WATERTOWN — The Huron girls’ tennis team is sixth after the opening day of the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament on Monday.

Aberdeen Central amassed 90 points to carry the lead into the second day of the two-day tournament. Watertown is second at 76, followed by Mitchell at 70, Yankton at 54 and Harrisburg at 36.

The Tigers sit just two points behind Harrisburg for the fifth spot.

Rounding out the field of teams and yet to score a point are Brandon Valley, Brookings and Pierre.

Huron had just two victories in the opening round of the singles competition.

AnneClaire Rubish, who is the fourth seed in the first flight, defeated fifth-seeded Mckenzie Vickery 10-5 to reach the semifinals.

Rubish will face top-seeded Nora Krajewski of Yankton in the semifinals.

Paw Kler Moo, who is also a fourth seed for the Tigers at No. 4 singles, recorded a 10-8 victory against fifth-seeded Sophia Nichols of Watertown in the opening round.

Moo will face top-seeded Chloe Ladner of Aberdeen Central in the semifinals.

Looking to rebound in the consolation bracket for Huron will be Say Glay at No. 2, Ann Hoek at No. 3, Madeline Kleinsasser at No. 5 and Idella Meyer at No. 6.

Glay was defeated 10-4 by Leyla Meeser of Watertown. She will play Madelyn Von Wald of Harrisburg in the consolation semifinals.

Hoek was defeated 10-2 by Paige Mitzel of Yankton in the opening round. She will play Jessi Muth of Harrisburg in the consolation semifinals.

Kleinsasser, who was the third seed, suffered a 10-2 upset against Hannah Frye of Harrisburg. She will face Karlyn Koerner of Yankton in the consolation semifinals.

Jade Smith of Watertown recorded a 10-1 victory against Meyer in the opening round. Meyer will face Makenna Beck of Brandon Valley in the consolation semifinals.

The remainder of the singles competition and the doubles competition is slated today, beginning at 8 a.m.
