Huron baseball opens home portion of spring season

HURON –– The Huron Tigers played in their 2025 home opener at Memorial Ballpark Friday, taking the opener 5-0 and falling in the nightcap by the score of 9-4 against Sioux Falls Washington.
The Tigers put together multiple scoring rallies while shutting down multiple Washington rallies in a 5-0 victory in the opener.
Jack Pedersen tossed a complete game for the Tigers on the hill, with seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Tigers took advantage of errant Washington pitching, drawing nine walks and one hit batsman to go with five team hits.
Six Huron hitters reached base twice as Trace Wenz, Gabe Waldner, Brady Feenstra, and Tanner Gilbert each had a single and a walk. Bubba Peterson and Cooper Bischoff each drew a pair of walks.
Davis Chase drove in two runs to lead Huron, breaking open a scoreless game with a seeing-eye single up the middle in the third and adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Washington’s silent bats in the first game woke up in the second game, as the Warriors broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third with six runs. Washington would add a pair of runs in the fourth to open up an 8-0 lead, but the Tigers rallied in the fifth for four runs. In the end, they couldn’t overcome the deficit, falling 9-4.
Peterson climbed the mound to open the game for the Tigers in the nightcap, tossing 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on a hit and three walks while striking out three.
He was relieved by Tommie Martin, who got the Tigers through 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while adding a strikeout.
Logan Leyendecker closed the game with three innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out three.
The Tiger offense struggled to put rallies together in the second game, with 11 baserunners, but stranding seven of them.
Wenz set the table with a pair of singles, and Leyendecker followed with a single and a walk while adding in a stolen base.
Martin also reached base twice, with a single and a walk.
Huron is on the road Thursday against Yankton, but the junior varsity Tigers open their season today at Memorial against Brookings, with the first game at noon.
