HURON —  The Huron Tigers ran their current winning streak to four straight matches Tuesday night, with a 3-0 defeat of the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders in non-conference volleyball at Huron Arena. The win pushes Huron’s record to 12-10 while Roosevelt falls to 7-11.

Set scores for the Tigers were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-18.

“I think the girls really stepped it up tonight against Roosevelt,” said Huron head coach TyAnn Ulmer. “We made errors, yes, but we kept playing, we recovered and we played through.”

Huron played a solid game from the service line to the net, controlling the lead throughout most of the first two sets and showing they have the fortitude to come back, as they came from behind to take the third set and the match.

Both teams started strong, trading points earned on offense and committing very few errors in the early going. The Rough Riders got back-to-back kills from Avery Goebel and one from Rylie Brouwer to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 9-7 lead.

But a net violation stopped the rally and Hamtyn Heinz got Huron started with a quick-set kill. Roosevelt aided the Huron cause with three straight hitting errors and Heinz capped the rally with another kill. Goebel converted a short time later, and DaJai Claggett answered for the Tigers to open up a three-point lead.

Roosevelt got two back, but a kill from Claggett, who then stepped back and stroked an ace serve, and a kill from Aly Davis put Huron up 18-15 and Roosevelt never got any closer the rest of the set. Down the stretch it was kills from Davis and Samantha Mangmoradeth that sealed the 25-20 win.

Set two was all Tigers…to start. Mangmoradeth notched a kill and Heinz collected an ace. Roosevelt got a point back, but then hit four straight kill attempts long. After another Claggett ace and a slam dunk by Mangmoradeth on a Rough Rider errant pass, Huron led 8-1.

Slowly, Roosevelt began to climb back into the set, led by Goebel, Kaylee Evenson and Brouwer. They got the lead down to a single point, as back-to-back kills from Avery Allenstein made it 14-13 Huron, but two kills from Davis sandwiched around one of Hylton Heinz’s two ace serves in the match righted the ship.

Allenstein got another kill and Kate Wiebesiek got a block kill to cut it to three, but a 4-0 Huron run, keyed by a huge kill from Makenzie Siemonsma and one from Davis putshed the margin back to seven points, at 22-15.

Roosevelt, however, refused to buckle, as kills from Brouer and Wiebesiek, combined with a pair from Goebel cut the lead to two and a short time later, the margin was down to one, at 23-22, prompting an Ulmer timeout to stop the Roosevelt 5-0 run.

Out of the timeout, Hamtyn Heinz fed Claggett, who went cross court with a thunderous kill, prompting a Rider timeout. But the die was cast, as serving specialist Madison Hershman stepped up and dropped a perfect dying quail in front of the Roosevelt back row defense to close out the win, 25-22.

Roosevelt regrouped and came out for the third set focused on changing the tide, as Evenson and Wiebesiek each collected two kills and Mateja Cousins had a pair of aces as the Rough Riders jumped out 6-2.

The lead grew to 8-3 before Huron began to climb back into it. A pair of Rider errors, along with a Siemonsma kill cut the margin to two and it stayed that way until to more errors by Roosevelt forged a 10-10 tie. Goebel got a kill, as did Evenson and then Brouer as the Rough Riders opened up a 14-10 lead at the midway point of the set.

Kills by Claggett and Mangmoradeth, along with a Huron error made the score 15-12 in favor of Roosevelt.

But the wheels were wobbling on the Rider express and after two kills from Claggett, Huron was back on top, 16-15. Evenson got it tied again, at 16-16, but Huron closed the set and the match on a 9-2 run, keyed by kills from three different players to close out the 25-18 win.

“We were a little tight on serve receive in parts of the second and third sets,”Ulmer noted. “But we worked through that and I was happy with our hitting tonight. We told the girls ‘No tipping!’ in practice this week and it was good to see them go out and swing aggressively.”

Davis led another balanced attack for the Tigers with nine kills, while Claggett added eight and Mangmoradeth contributed seven. Aurora Dreyer and Siemonsma each had four kills as well for Huron.

“Hamtyn does a good job of getting the ball to the hot players,” Ulmer said.

“We don’t have that go-to player for all the kills, but we have five who are very skilled and when they are all involved we are more successful.”

Huron also had two aces each from Hylton Heinz, Claggett and Hershman, and the Tiger serve receive held Roosevelt to a total of two aces all match long.

Huron returns to action Thursday night when they hit the road to take on No. 2 ranked Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

In lower level games, Roosevelt took the Sophomore contest 25-22 and 25-18, while Huron rebounded with a 25-19, 13-25, 15-9 win in the JV match.
