SIOUX FALLS — Five of the six singles players for Huron reached the semifinals during the opening day of the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Monday.

The strong showing has the Tigers third in the team standings. St. Thomas More holds the top spot heading into the final day with 316.5 points. Rapid City Christian is second at 284, followed by Huron at 276, Sioux Falls Christian at 258 and Vermillion at 217.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, second-seeded Lizzy Heinen advance to the semifinals in the second flight singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win against seventh-seeded Mya Halverson of Vermillion. She will face third-seeded Halle Karmzin of Sioux Falls Christian in the semifinals.

Ann Hoek also received a bye at the fourth seed in third flight singles for the Tigers. She swept fifth-seeded Abby Hanson of Vermillion 6-3, 7-6 (16) to reach the semifinals, where she will face top-seeded Anna Westenberg of Sioux Falls Christian in her opening match today.

Say Glay is the second seed for Huron in fourth flight singles. She got past seventh-seeded Allie Mondloch of Spearfish 6-0, 6-3 and will face third-seeded Amelia Pederson of Milbank in a semi-final match today.

After defeating Miriam Welch of Lennox 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round, Huron’s Paw Kler Moo, who was seeded sixth in fifth flight singles, upset third-seeded Evi Reinicke of St. Thomas More 6-2, 6-0 to reach the semifinals. She will face seventh-seeded Breanna Tedrow of Pierre, who also recorded an upset in the quarterfinals.

As the No. 4 seed in sixth flight singles, Madeline Kleinsasser opened the tournament with a bye and them got poas Genevieve Oxford of Pierre 6-2, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

Kleinsasser will play top-seeded Kasey Lemstra of Sioux Falls Christian in her opening match today.

AnneClaire Rubish opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against No. 10-seeded Katherine Kretchman of Aberdeen Roncalli to reach the quarterfinals in first flight singles.

Rubish, who was seeded seventh, faced second-seeded Riley Geyer of Rapid City Christian and came out on the short end of a 6-3, 6-1 decision. She then matched up against third-seeded Elsa Johnson of Sioux Falls Christian in the fifth-place semifinals and dropped a 10-5 decision, which ended her tournament.

Glay and Moo combined to reach the championship match for the Tigers in No. 3 doubles. As the second seed, they opened with a bye and then defeated seventh-seeded Madison in the 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Glay and Moo then got past third-seeded Sioux Falls Christian 6-4, 6-2 to earn their spot in the title match. They will face fourth-seeded St. Thomas More for the title.

Huron’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Rubish and Heinen opened with a by as the fifth seed and then upset fourth-seeded Sioux Falls Christian 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Rubish and Heinen took top-seeded Rapid City Christian to a tiebreaker, but fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. They will face third-seeded Vermillion for third-place today.

Hoek and Kleinsasser defeated Lennox 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of No. 2 doubles, but then fell 6-3, 6-1 to third-seeded St. Thomas More in in the quarterfinals.

Hoek and Kleinsasser, who were the sixth seed, with face seventh-seeded Milbank in the fifth-place semifinals today.
