HURON — The Huron Tiger volleyball team overwhelmed the visiting Rapid City Central Cobblers Friday night, notching a dominant 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-16) win at Huron Arena.

The win brings Huron back to .500 for the season at 10-10, while Central falls to 5-15.

Huron’s offense had a great evening, as four individual players collected at least four kills, and the Tigers used substantial runs in each set to put away the non-conference win.

Huron started the first set with three straight points, as first DaJai Claggett, then Samantha Mangmoradeth found the floor on kill attempts and Hamtyn Heinz clocked an ace serve. After Cobbler kill by Aurora Prudich, Huron went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by three straight kills from Aly Davis and capped by an Alexis Ziegeldorf kill.

Rapid City kept it close, but Huron caught another wave of offense, as two aces from Madison Hershman and a pair of kills by Claggett led a 6-0 blitz that pushed the lead to 10 points and all but ended the first set.

Heinz had two more aces and Claggett closed the set with a kill for the 25-11 set win.

The Cobblers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on two kills by Prudich before the Tigers came to life in the second set.

But when they woke up, the were cranky, as Heinz started a run with a kill. A pair of Cobbler errors and a Mangmoradeth big swing  pushed Huron into the lead and a Heinz ace capped the 6-0 run.

The two teams played most of the set evenly, until, with the score 16-12 after a Jocelyn Van Dam kill for the Cobblers, Huron went on a quick 4-0 run that made the score 20-12 and appeared to be cruising to the set win. A pair of Huron hitting errors kept life in the Central attack, and three straight hitting errors later in the set on the Tigers delayed the win, which Davis and Makenzie Siemonsma closed out with back-to-back kills.

Heinz got a kill and followed it up with an ace to open the third set, but two hitting errors on the Tigers got Rapid City on the board. Huron however got kills from Claggett and Davis and another kill from Heinz  to cap a 4-0 run that established a 7-2 Tiger lead.

The remainder of the set was made up of two-steps-forward, one-step-back, as Huron could string together a two-or-three point run, only to see Central stop any lengthy Tiger rally.

But what it meant for Huron as that the lead was never in jeopardy and slowly continued to increase.

Claggett notched an ace and then closed the game out with a thundering kill that finished the match for the Tigers.

Huron coach TyAnn Ulmer saw a strong serve receive and passing game from her team, as Libero Hylton Heinz had 12 digs and consistently passed the ball to her sister, setter Hamtyn Heinz. Hamtyn Heinz made the most of those passing efforts as she handed out 22 set assists in the match, while still finding time to account for six big aces and five kills.

DaJai Claggett led the Tigers with nine kills and Davis added six in a balanced offensive effort.

Mangmoradeth ended with four kills and Siemonsma chipped in four.

It is a quick turn around for the Tigers, as they will host the Rapid City Central Cobblers in the second game of the weekend doubleheader, with a 1:30 p.m. start time scheduled at Huron Arena.
