James Valley Christian wins battle of ranked squads

HURON — In a battle between two teams ranked in the South Dakota High Soccer Coaches Association poll, James Valley Christian edged Rapid City Christian 3-2 on Saturday.
The two teams swapped goals during the first five minutes of play.
Isaac Fast scored on an unassisted shot for the Vikings, who are currently ranked fifth in Class A, while Eli Egge scored for Rapid City Christian, which is currently ranked second.
With another unassisted goal before the half, Isaac Fast put JVC in front 2-1.
The Vikings then used a goal by Noah Fast on a pass from Gavin Waldner to go up 3-1 early in the second half.
Egge capped the scoring with his second goal for Rapid City Christian on a penalty kick.
Jonah Niederbaumer earned the win in the net for the Vikings, finishing with six saves.
JVC, which is now 4-3, will host fourth-ranked Freeman Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The matchup between the two teams will extend the longest running soccer series in South Dakota.
The two schools first played each other in soccer in 1979.
