Vlieger finishes strong for Tigers at Sahli/Salmi Invitational

ABERDEEN — Josie Vlieger of Huron flirted with a top-10 finish during the Sahli/Salmi Invitational held Thursday at Lee Park Golf Course.

Vlieger finished 12th for the Tigers in the girls’ varsity race with a time of 21:45.66.

Seventh-grader Grace McElroy of Watertown won the event in 19:29.22, while Juna Ramey of Aberdeen Central was second at 19:47.66.

Also running in the girls’ race for Huron was Tatum Peterson, who finished 31st at 23:39.98.

Pierre claimed the girls’ team title with a 44, while Watertown was second at 56. Rounding out the top five were Aberdeen Central at 61, Aberdeen Roncalli at 80 and Fargo South of North Dakota at 115.

Pierre teammates Jared Lutmer and Caleb Morris were first and second, respectively, in the varsity boys’ race. Lutmer used a 15:45.67 to finish more than a minute ahead of Morris, who stopped the clock at 17:01.78.

Will Knippling was the top Huron runner, finishing 37th at 20:41.03.

Rounding out the varsity roster for the Tigers were Angelo Medina at 21:01.75, Cameron Cutshaw at 21:04.48; and Alec Pester at 21:21.91.

Aberdeen Central claimed the boys’ title with 40, while Pierre was second at 51. Watertown finished third at 60, followed by Jamestown (N.D.) at 98 and Aberdeen Roncalli at 133.

Teagan Lien won the junior varsity boys’ race for Huron in 15:01.81, while teammate James Weir was just outside the top 10 with a 15:53.46.

Lily Meyer was second for the Tigers in the JV girls’ race at 18:26.83, while Nora Pester was fourth at 18:35.23.

The Huron cross country teams will now be off until the Clyde Cotton Invitational on Sept. 16 at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
