Wessington Springs, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket to meet for 281 girls' title

WOLSEY — The Wessington Springs Spartans will play for the 281 Conference Tournament title Thursday evening, after they posted a 41-39, come-from-behind win over the James Valley Christian Lady Vikings Tuesday afternoon at the Wolsey-Wessington High School Gymnasium.

The Spartans twin towers of 5-foot, 11-inch Carissa Scheel and 6-2 Avery Orth scored 19 and 11 points, respectively, to lead Wessington Springs (7-2) into the title game against Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Thursday at Huron Arena.

Addison Bartholow led the Lady Vikes, who fall to 6-4, with 14 points while Alexa Goertz added 11. JVC will play Iroquois/Lake Preston for third place Thursday, also at Huron Arena.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 44, Iroquois/Lake Preston 40
WOLSEY — The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks pulled away in the final period to earn a 44-40 win over the Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks and a ticket to Thursday evening’s girls’ 281 Conference Tournament championship game.

The Blackhawks will face Wessington Springs for all the marbles in the tournament, while Iroquois/Lake Preston will take on James Valley Christian for third place.

Liz Boschee led the Blackhawks with 20 points - and scored 10 of SCW’s 11 fourth quarter points - and also had 10 rebounds to propel SCW, now 8-2, into the title match.

The Sharks got 20 points from Adison Moore and nine each from Faith Steffensen and Hadlee Holt. Holt added 15 rebounds and Kera Dubro had 10 boards. ILP falls to 7-4.

HURON - The Highmore-Harrold Pirates jumped out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to a 54-26 win Tuesday over Sunshine Bible Academy in consolation action in the 281 Conference Girls’ Tournament, played at the JVC gym.

The Pirates (5-5) were led by Kendall Cermak and Jada Baloun with 14 points. Baloun and April Fallis each grabbed six rebounds to pace the team.

Sunshine Bible falls to 1-7. Abby Hinman and Betra Amare each scored six points to lead the Crusaders.

URON — The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds outscored the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots 12-8 in the fourth quarter to post a come-from-behind 47-77 win in the consolation semifinals of the girls’ 281 Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the James Valley Christian Gymnasium.

Lainey Uttecht scored 23 points and Payton Kemnitz added 16 for the Lady ‘Birds, who improve to 4-7 with the win and will face Highmore-Harrold for the consolation championship on Thursday at Huron Arena.

Shae  Uttecht claimed six rebounds for Wolsey-Wessington.

Cambree Hoekman led the Lady Pats iwth 16 points while Katelyn Schroeder chipped in 12 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds. Hitchcock-Tulare, which falls to 2-8, will play Sunshine Bible Academy Thursday morning in the seventh-place game.
