Yard waste bin pickup to begin Wednesday

Posted

HURON –– Huron City Commissioner Rich Bragg made the announcement during the commission meeting on Monday evening to remind Huron residents that the first yard waste (green) bin pick up would be this Wednesday and would continue on Wednesdays through the month of April.

Beginning on May 5, yard waste bin collection will move to each resident’s usual garbage/recycling pick up day. Bragg also iterated that the open yard waste free use area at the solid waste facility is open for those who would like to bring their yard waste to the facility.

Commissioner Bryan Smith spoke during public forum to remind Huron residents that the city commission election between incumbent Drew Weinreis and challenger Rhonda Kludt is on Tuesday, April 8, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Huron Arena. Absentee voting is available through Monday, April 7, at 5 p.m. at the city finance office in City Hall during business hours.

The commission approved the first reading of Ordinance 2193-5-129 pertaining to business licenses and regulations surrounding liquor licenses. City finance director Paullyn Carey explained that the change to the current ordinance primarily removes the specific requirement of an electrical inspection from the liquor licensing portion of the process as that is part of the building inspection process.

Police Chief Derek Layher presented a transfer of equipment request to the commission to transfer 11 ballistic vests and 11 ballistic helmets by declaring them surplus property. The equipment was for the previous strategic response team in the department and was fully funded through federal grant funding, so the city did not spend any money on this equipment. This was approved.

The commission approved the purchase of a mini split air conditioning unit for Putters and Scoops due to the failure of the previous system. The cost of the approved purchase is $6,614.

Commissioners also:
• Approved a special on-off sale alcoholic beverage license filed by Top Floor Events for a Chamber Mixer on May 13 at HRMC, 172 4th St. SE.
• Approved a 30-day extension of the management agreement of Huron Event Center.
• Approved full-time status of patrol sergeant Cole Long, effective March 23.

• Approved full-time status of police officer Cody Maxwell, effective March 23.
• Approved full-time status of police detective sergeant Andrea Rietveld, effective March 23.
