Huron boys tennis opens state play

SIOUX FALLS — A pair of Huron players are still in the hunt for state championships at the Class A State Boys’ Tennis Tournament, which began Monday in Sioux Falls.
Htoo Say Zan in third flight singles and Aung Myit in sixth flight singles remained unbeaten after the first day of the two-day event.
Both received byes in the opening round.
Zan, who was the No. 5 seed, lost the opening set of his semifinals match against fourth-seeded Ethan Palmer of Rapid City Christan 7-6 via tiebreaker, but rebounded with a 6-0 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker for the match. He used a 10-8 score to reach the semifinals, where he will face top-seeded Jack Squire of Sioux Falls Christian today.
Myit, who was the fourth seed, used set scores of 6-4, 6-0 to get past No. 5-seeded Jacoby LaRoche of Pierre in the quarterfinals at No. 6. He will face top-seeded Aaron Soroka of Sioux Falls Christian in the semifinals today.
The rest of Huron’s singles lineup — Matthew Thin at No. 1, Say Poe at No. 2, Maner Htoo at No. 4 and Ler ai Moo at No. 5 — will be playing in the fifth-place semifinals today.
In doubles, Huron’s No. 3 team of Moo and Ywa Hae Moo will be playing for third place today, while the other two doubles teams will be playing for fifth place.
Huron is fifth in the team standings after the first day of competition.
Sioux Falls Christian, which is the defending state champion, leads the way with 360 points. Rapid City Christian in second at 328, followed by St. Thomas More at 246 and Pierre at 214.
The final day of competition will be held today.
