Cookie Dough Cupcakes - a unique and delectable treat

Posted

HURON — Coming into baking as an adult, Chris Person found a passion — a passion he’s now turned into a venture opening Wednesday in Huron. His business, Cookie Dough Cupcakes will open a storefront at 1500 Dakota Ave. S. on Sept. 1.

Person, originally from Hitchcock, and his daughter, Ashley, operate the business, with the intention for father to do the baking and daughter to run the storefront of the shop.

Chris began his baking journey in college. “I discovered my love for baking thirty…plus years ago,” Person recalled. “I found out that if I wanted to enjoy baked goods, I needed to make them because there was no one who was going to make them for me.”

He began by baking egg bakes and French toast bakes for church, then expanded his baking experimenting as his daughters reached life milestones and requested a special treat.

So how can you have cookie dough in a cupcake?

“Our cookie dough cupcakes have a cupcake with a layer of cookie dough and frosting on top,” Chris explained. “Our chocolate chip is probably our most popular.”

“It’s definitely my favorite,” chimed in Ashley.

Chris experimented with making his cookie dough cupcakes as a side business in the home. When working from home during COVID over the last year, Chris missed baking for his church family, so the idea of opening up the shop became very appealing.

Learning to bake was a self-taught skill, one that Chris admits is certainly easier in the modern age. “I watch plenty of videos and read a lot of blogs, then try things from there out on my own.”

While the business is focused on cookie dough cupcakes, and will offer only one size — what Person terms the “mega mini,” which is what happens when a mini cupcake meets the layer of cookie dough and frosting making it the size of  “regular” cupcakes.

“We have chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate chip, peanut butter, and snicker doodle that will be regular cookie dough offerings. Then we will add in some specialty cookie dough flavors as a highlight flavor for a week — butterscotch is a personal favorite of mine,” Chris noted. “But we will also have filled cupcakes like wedding cupcakes, and Almond Joy cupcakes, and standard chocolate, vanilla, and lemon as well — lots of options.”

Cupcakes can be purchased by the single cupcake, in three-packs, six-packs, and by the dozen.

Large orders will require pre-order, but the day’s stock will be what is available for the day. Once it’s out for the day, it’s out.

The shop will be partnering with Farm Life Creamery from Ethan, and the Persons are very excited about that partnership. Coffee will also be available.

The standard hours for Cookie Dough Cupcakes will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., though expanded orders can be set up in order to pick up at different times as need be. Orders can be placed online and shipped as well. Chris will be working his sales job with Daktronics from the office in the back of the shop.

Abbey noted that there will be plenty of announcements coming from the Facebook page and the website at cookiedoughcupcakes.com regarding specials and the opening Wednesday.

Long-term, the Persons would like to see the shop be successful enough to expand to other communities.

Primarily, Chris says, he’d like to have the shop become part of the community. “I would like to have whenever there’s a special event in the life of someone in Huron, I want that community member to think that ‘I want Cookie Dough Cupcakes part of this’,” Chris related. “That is what would make me the happiest.”
